Week 5 Forum

To pic : Lynsey Addario So far in Lynsey's book, I am really impressed with how she keeps coming across things that would normally scare other people away and they wouldn't want to do that job anymore, but she is so dedicated to what she does, that she is still willing to do it, even when she comes close to death, like when the car bomb went off seconds after she walked away and a fellow journalist was killed. something that left an impression on me, not necessarily a good one, was how she and her boyfriend got back together even though he was cheating on her. She was so desperate to have someone with her when she came home that she settled for something that is definitely less than ideal (in my opinion anyways). She has made a compromised her personal life for her photojournalism. My favorite quote is from when she was taking pictures of the american soldiers, and they pointed her guns at her and told her to go away; "We were allowed to cover only what the people with gu

Week 4 Forum

Topic 1- I found the code that said  "T reat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see" to be the most  intriguing  because it is the only on that is left up to the photographer's  judgment . There isn't a set definition of what the public has a need to see. The photographer has to decide what that means. The second thing that I found most interes ting was " Strive for total and unrestricted access to subjects, recommend alternatives to shallow or rushed opportunities, seek a diversity of viewpoints, and work to show unpopular or unnoticed points of view". This one was interesting to me because it said to work to show unpopular or unnoticed points of view. I feel like that is something that is kind of under attack today. People aren't really fond of knowing

Born on March 24, 1886 in Illinois Edward Weston grew up in Chicago. He began doing photography at the age of 16 when his father gave him his first camera. He started out taking photos of parks and his aunt's farm. He moved to California in 1906 where he started being a traveling photographer, taking pictures of children, pets, and funerals. In 1908, he went to the  the Illinois College of Photography. He finished the 12 month long course in 6 months, and then went back to California. In 1909, he started working in portrait studios. He got married and had 4 kids, and then opened his own studio in 1911. He won many awards for his portraits. In 1922, he visited the ARMCO Steel Plant in Middletown, Ohio, and  the photos he took there “marked a turning point in [his] career.” He went from doing portraits do doing more abstract photos. In 1923, he moved to Mexico City and opened up a photographic studio. He moved back to California in 1926 where he started the work that he was most w

Topic 1- possible portrait subjects Melissia Willhoite She owns and runs 2 child daycares. She is passionate about kids. She has 4 of her own and loves being around them. The best environment to photograph her in would be in her daycare. Some props could be toys on the ground and in the background, or an actual kid. She does daycare for my cousins kid, so I could get her number from her, or I could just get it from online and give her a call. Another person I could take photos of could be one of the chefs that are going to be at the vegan festival I am going to this weekend. I don't have any information on them, but I could meet with them in person and schedule a time to meet with them and take pictures in their own kitchen. Topic 2- 1) The best photo that I have taken so far, in my opinion, is the close up photo in week one. I like this photo because she has such an intense look on her face, the photo has good lighting, it is well composed, and the surroundings tell

Topic 1- Photographer of the week Edward Weston was  born March 24, 1886 in Illinois . He began doing photography at the age of 16 when his father gave him a camera. He started out taking photos of parks and his aunts farm. In 1908, he went to the  the Illinois College of Photography. For me, what stands out most about his photos are his abstract photos that look at ordinary objects, like seashells and peppers in a way we normally don't look at them. He was best known for his black and white photos of landscapes, natural forms, and nudes. Topic 2- Lynsey Addario I thought that so far, the book is good. what impressed me most was when she was in Libya and how she persevered in spite of a lot of photographers leaving because it was too dangerous. I think her work is really impactful and it makes you think. some lessons that I could apply with my photojournalism is get closer. one of my favorite quotes is, talking about war photojournalism, "It is the way we make a living, b
